NUS Graduate School

The map was created in response to a brief by the NUS Graduate School, with the goal of visually showcasing the diverse faculties across the National University of Singapore, each represented by their respective mascots.

Through playful storytelling and a lively composition, this piece invites viewers to explore the university’s landscape through a fresh, imaginative lens—where knowledge meets character, and every mascot has a story to tell.

Mapping the Faculties

To bring the scene to life, we started mapping out the faculties, making sure each faculty was placed in its actual geographic location. This meant plenty of referencing: satellite views, maps, and photos from multiple angles to accurately capture each school’s architecture.

Every building was carefully illustrated to reflect its real-world counterpart, creating a familiar yet playful visual experience for those who know the campus—and an inviting one for those just getting to know it.

The process began with a few rounds of detailed sketches to ensure each building matched its real-world location. Before colouring the full scene, I did a separate pass focused only on colouring the buildings — this helped both myself and the client focus on architectural accuracy without distractions from characters or background elements.

The final look before animation

Once the buildings were in place, I added each faculty’s mascot into the scene. Their placement was carefully considered to reflect the character of each school while keeping the overall composition lively and balanced.
